For a variety of reasons, a set of human teeth doesn’t always settle in perfectly. In fact, improper teeth alignment, such as overbites, crowns, and overcrowding, are fairly common in humans. In the United States, orthodontic work is a thriving business. Many American children between the ages of 6 and 10 undergo some kind of orthodontic work or testing. Generally, it is better to have orthodontic treatments done at a young age in order to prevent teeth misalignment from getting worse. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, nearly four out of five teenagers undergo some kind of orthodontic procedure, the most common of which being braces.

Braces are solid bands, usually made from metal but not always, that gradually direct teeth into a proper alignment. The term “braces” itself originated in the United States in the early 20th century. Since then, braces have become even more popular and accessible as orthodontic technology has improved. As a result, millions of Americans and people throughout the world have straight teeth who otherwise would not have had without orthodontic dentistry.

There are a number of brace models to choose from. Traditional wire braces are the most common but there are less visible and less invasive orthodontic braces as well. Invisible braces, for example, are made out of transparent material and are usually removable. They are popular because they can detach easily and they can be worn unnoticed. Its ability to be detached is especially advantageous. Anyone who’s ever had metal braces knows how inconvenient and uncomfortable braces can be while eating, drinking, flossing, and brushing your teeth! There are also braces models that are attached to the back of your teeth as opposed to the front, making them unnoticeable to the casual observer.

Whatever model a person goes with, rest assured that braces deliver effective, safe results. Straight teeth is something everybody should have the ability to have, and braces provide a proven solution.
