Three Important Things You Should Know About Braces

Braces

It’s no secret that braces can have a huge impact on an individual’s life. Although braces are traditionally associated with youth, the idea of adult braces is becoming more and more common as people begin to realize the full range of advantages that orthodontic treatment provides. In fact, 30% of all orthodontic patients in the U.S. right now are adults.

The goal of orthodontics is part aesthetics, and part health. It can be embarrassing to have crooked teeth, which affects one’s self esteem. When crooked teeth crowd each other, the issue can also lead to later tooth decay.

Although braces are increasingly common — with an estimated 33% of people receiving orthodontic treatment at some point — not everyone understands all the facts. Here are three important things you should know about braces, and your orthodontic choices.

1. Not All Braces are Metal

Many people shudder to remember the braces of their youth — thick, metal, and highly visible. Though this remains a choice today, there are actually several types of braces. Ceramic braces are one choice. They are clear instead of metal, making them less visible. Another option is Invisalign, which is quite different from the traditional metal and bracket layout. Invisalign, also known as “invisible braces,” consist of clear plastic alignment trays that the wearer trades out every few weeks.

2. Orthodontics Don’y Cost More Than You Can Afford

You might be surprised by the actual prices of braces — as well as what your insurance might be willing to cover. Out-of-pocket costs for braces are typically in the $5,000 to $6,000 range. While this might seem high, the payments will be structured over the course of a year or two. If you need 18 months of treatment, for example, the cost of treatment per month could be a fairly manageable $280. And, with proper care, your straight teeth last a lifetime.

3. Braces are Not Highly Restrictive

Not so. While there are some foods the orthodontist will recommend you stay away from — such as sticky candies, popcorn, ice, and uncut raw vegetables, for the most part your diet will not feel very restricted, and it is easy to make substitutes for the few items you cannot consume.
