These bacteria can cause cavities if you feed them enough sugar. These bacteria are called Mutans Streptococci. They generate acid as they consume the sugar. This is an issue because that acid wears away at your teeth and the enamel. If left unchecked, this acid will burn its way down to the inner layer of your teeth known as Dentin. Dentin is where the nerves and blood vessels are within your teeth. If the bacteria and acid have made their way this far, you will definitely start to feel some pain. However, it is best to prevent the acid burning a hole down this far in the first place. This is why brushing and flossing your teeth are so important. You want to brush away all that sugar so that the microbes don’t eat it and produce the burning acid.
